The Old Squit 200

A 207 km cycling event starting from Norwich. Controls at Wells-next-the-Sea and Swaffham, plus 6 information controls.

The start is from Norwich Train Station and returns to The Glasshouse (Wetherspoons) in the centre of historic Norwich, opposite Elm Hill. Heading north-west you will soon be outside the city and in tranquil countryside heading to the North Norfolk coast. Grab a coffee in the historic market town of Holt before continuing west through the North Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to Wells-next-the-Sea. From here we continue further west, just short of Hunstanton and then meander south, through Castle Acre to the southernmost point of the route in Boughton. It’s all eastwards back to Norwich, with stop in Swaffham along the way through some enjoyable lanes in the heart of Norfolk.

Origin of Event This event was originally devised by Sue Gatehouse and Keith Harrison. Under the banner ‘Norfolk n Good Audax’, Sue and Keith ran audax events out of Norwich for 18 years. They originally started because they wanted to revive the Seething 600 event, which was popular in the 80’s and 90’s, and went on to host events throughout Norfolk – never running the same route twice!

Reepham is a small historic market town located about 12 milesnorthwest of Norwich, set between the River Wensum and River Bure. Reepham is unusual in having three historic churches on (or near) the same site St Mary’s and St Michael’s still stand, joined together, while All Saints’ lies in ruins after a fire in 1543.

Kelling is a small on the North Norfolk coast in England — set within the beautiful Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Nearby Kelling Quags nature reserve is part of the larger North Norfolk Coast SSSI, valuable for birdlife and wetland habitats.

Wells-next-the-Sea is a charming seaside town located on the north coast of Norfolk, approximately 10 miles inland from the North Sea. Wells-next-the-Sea is part of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and is renowned for its picturesque setting, historic harbor, and beautiful beaches.

Ringstead lies around 3 miles east of Hunstanton and close to the coast of The Wash, nestled in gentle West Norfolk countryside. The village is popular with walkers and cyclists, lying on the Peddars Way long-distance path and near the National Cycle Network.

Castle Acre is a small, picturesque village in west Norfolk, renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval heritage and attractive rural setting. Castle Acre is best known for its remarkable Norman remains, 11th-century Norman Castle and the Priory – one of the best-preserved Cluniac monastic sites in England, founded in 1090.

Boughton is a small, rural village in west Norfolk, set in open countryside close to the Royal Sandringham Estate. It lies about 4 miles north of King’s Lynn and just south of Sandringham village.

Swaffham is a historic market town in Norfolk, England, located around 30 miles west of Norwich. Swaffham is famous for being the setting of the story of the “Swaffham Man” or the “Swaffham Jeweller,” a tale that dates back to the 18th century. The story tells of a poor man who dreams of hidden treasure, leading him on a journey that ultimately reveals the treasure to be metaphorical—teaching a lesson in seeking wisdom and contentment.

Norwich has a very long history, dating back over 1,000 years. In the Middle Ages it was one of England’s largest and wealthiest cities, driven by trade, particularly in wool. This legacy is still visible today with Norwich Cathedral (founded in 1096) dominating the skyline with its spire and cloisters, the original Norman castle keep and more medieval churches than any other city in England outside London.
